Potential consequences of sharing patient information online

On Behalf of | Jan 21, 2025 | Nursing License Defense |

Almost everyone uses social media now. Posting on Facebook, making Instagram Reels or recording TikTok videos is very common. However, nurses and other healthcare professionals need to be extra careful.

There are important rules to follow to protect patient privacy and avoid serious legal and professional problems.

What not to share on social media

Nurses must be very careful about what they post online. Here are some things you should never share:

  • Any patient information, even if you think it’s anonymous: Even without using a patient’s name, small details can sometimes identify them.
  • Photos or videos taken in patient care areas: Taking pictures or videos where patients might be visible, even in the background, can violate their privacy.
  • Opinions or judgments about patients: Even without names or other details, sharing your opinions or judgments about a patient’s behavior, health or situation breaks professional rules and patient confidentiality.
  • Any information that could violate HIPAA regulations: The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) is a federal law protecting patient health information. Sharing anything that could identify a patient, even indirectly, can be a HIPAA violation.

Remember, even posts that seem harmless can accidentally reveal private health information. It’s always best to be respectful of patient privacy.

Consequences of sharing patient information

Sharing patient information online, whether through text, photos, videos or other media, can have serious consequences for nurses. Your employer might take action, like suspending or even firing you. They could also involve nursing boards, which might lead to losing your nursing license.

Patients can also file lawsuits after a privacy violation. In very serious cases, there could even be criminal charges under HIPAA. Besides these official punishments, sharing private information can seriously hurt your professional reputation and damage the trust between you and your patients.

Once someone posts something on the internet, it’s almost impossible to take it down completely. This means the consequences can last a very long time. Be very cautious online. Your career depends on it.
